Off the Board

A game or market the sportsbook has temporarily pulled from betting, usually because of uncertainty like injuries or weather.

When a sportsbook takes a game “off the board” (you might see it shortened to OTB), it simply means that event is temporarily closed for betting. No new wagers can go on that game until the sportsbook decides to open the market back up. Don’t worry, though — any bets you placed before it went off the board are still valid and will be graded as normal once the event finishes.

Sportsbooks pull games off the board to shield themselves from uncertainty that could lead to one-sided or poorly informed betting. The most common reason is a big injury to a key player, especially when nobody’s quite sure of their status. If a star quarterback is listed as questionable and the reports keep contradicting each other, the sportsbook may take the game off the board until things become clearer. Weather, particularly in outdoor sports, can also be the trigger.

Other reasons include coaching changes, trade rumors close to a deadline, odd betting patterns that hint at insider knowledge, and venue changes. Once the sportsbook has enough information to set a fair line again, the game goes back on the board with updated odds that reflect the new situation.

Example

On a Sunday morning, the sportsbook has the Buffalo Bills listed as 4-point favorites against the New England Patriots. Two hours before kickoff, word gets out that the Bills’ starting quarterback hurt his hand in warmups and might not play. The sportsbook immediately takes the game off the board, and no new bets are accepted. Thirty minutes later, the team announces a backup quarterback will start. The sportsbook reopens the market with the Bills now listed as 1-point underdogs, reflecting how much expectations have changed.

Key Points

  • It’s temporary: Off the board means the game is briefly unavailable for betting. It does not mean the game is cancelled.
  • Existing bets stand: Wagers placed before the game went off the board stay active and get settled based on the final result.
  • Injury uncertainty is the top cause: A key player’s unclear status is the most common reason a sportsbook pulls a game from the menu.
  • It protects the sportsbook: Going off the board lets sportsbooks avoid taking bets based on information gaps that could cost them dearly.
  • Lines often shift on return: When the game comes back on the board, the odds and spreads are usually adjusted to reflect whatever new information caused the removal.
